18 February 2011 12 Comments

Finally, the much-awaited update for Samsung Captivate owners has come to live and you can update your mobile over the air for the FROYO Android 2.2 operating system. If you have not given up or changed your beloved device, then today is the day to celebrate the late but not the least update.

We have got this news from some of the Captivate owners who has sent this in, go rush for yours!!

Update:

huh, the Samsung Captivate owners find themselves to be disappointed much as the update has been pulled back with no future promises or dates for the future updates.

Still what is not clear is why Samsung Captivate is being so much biased to the resentment of the owners.

My Captivate has been in ‘Software Update — Communication in progress” for about 30 minutes. Either it is stuck or is downloading a very large file on AT&T’s incredibily slow network.

No Update TODAY . I spoke to Samsung rep , they haven’t released the update . Not on OTA download either . Great support SAMSUNG , great way to support your product and CUSTOMERs – in my case FORMER CUSTOMER .

For those who are technically inclined, and ONLY those people (do not do if you are not comfortable and knowledgeable), there are third-party built firmwares that long ago surpassed the Samsung issued firmwares, IMHO. I’ve been running 2.2 for quite some time. Even now, I don’t plan to replace the kernel with their newer one, as mine is superior (I believe). It also has more aggressive CPU frequency scaling, resulting in a boost in speed at times with negligible battery impact.

There are lots of ROMs to choose from. I, personally, like a hybrid of Dorian’s v5 with an updated kernel. There may be a better choice out there. Just know you don’t have to stick with AT&T.

Worried about ‘bricking’ your phone? Don’t be that worried. The people at the XDA forums or around the web can help, and it can usually be recovered. Still, this does technically invalidate your warranty (if they know), and be sure to backup all data on your phone first.

For me, it was a simple choice — wait for AT&T/Samsung forever, or go now. I went now. I haven’t regretted it. That said, I don’t intend future updates unless there is a compelling reason. Why? Once you’ve got a good device working like you want, don’t muck with it. Don’t fix what isn’t broken ;) .

Funny how Bart said from the Samsung rep that it would not be today (as in Friday) and would NOT BE OTA (well mostly the OTA part). I say this because I spoke to AT&T (as I own a Captivate myself). This is what a store rep said over the phone on my lunch break Friday:

    - The update would be released throughout this weekend starting Saturday and going through to Monday.
    - The update would be OTA (AT&T and Samsung definitely have their wires crossed here on this one)
    - That the fact it is on the software update page and sitting there trying to communicate with AT&T’s server is normal according to the rep as it will pull down the update when it is ready to do so and it is your turn to get it with your phone unit.

Another sign this seems to be OTA is that when I first went to my phone to see if the update was available it gave me 2 options instead of 1. They read as the following:

    - Resume Update
    - Search for Update

As I see it, I’m not a smartphone expert I just play one on TV (figure of speech people) so if the phone gives a “Resume Update” feature all by itself without being USB plugged into Windows via Kies Mini that’s the writing on the wall to me that says the update will be OTA. My nickel. Out!

…not sure where u are getting your information, but this is totally a totally bogus article, the update wont come until late March, a few weeks after AT&T releases the atrix and the captivate becomes the entry level android device.

    Hi Lonnie,

The update was there and it was pulled back, it will be live this week end. Please read all the comments before leaving one.

    Thanks
